Brexit Challengers Take To Court

A series of litigants are challenging Britain’s vote to separate from the European Union – a move known as Brexit – saying they were misled by the politicans who advocated for the departure. “I believe the people have been fooled,” said Gina Miller, co-founder of London fund manager SCM Private, who is the main claimant in a case filed with London’s High Court. “They have not realized that the referendum was not legally binding and secondly there is no Brexit plan.” She said she believes “we need to have a better-informed debate on what this momentous decision means.” The June 23 referendum vote, in which 17.41 million UK citizens voted to leave the EU, took the world largely by surprise. It had a negative impact on Britain’s pound currency and roiled financial markets. At least seven lawsuits have been filed attempting to force the government to vote on whether leaving is the right decision. “I don’t think people knew the ramifications of this, of what’s happened, and I felt really sorry that people had been tricked and fooled,” Miller said.
