Problem With Trump Muslim Judge Statement: There Are None

Donald Trump is under fire for suggesting that “it’s possible” Muslim judges would be biased against him. The only problem is, there are no Muslim judges on the federal bench. Of the 785 total federal judges, 265 are women. There are 107 African Americans, 80 Hispanics, 25 Asian American and Pacific Islanders, one Native American, and 579 whites, according to the Federal Judicial Center. Though religion is not computed in official figures, The Guardian reports that several non-government organizations confirmed there are no federal judges who identify as Muslim. “It’s very damaging to the entire perception of how the judiciary is viewed,” said Christopher Kang, former deputy assistant and deputy counsel to Obama. “The judiciary is, and should be seen as, a fair and independent branch of government, and I think that means those sorts of broad, frankly racist characterizations just do damage to the institution.”
