Report Of Gmail Hack Was Mostly Bogus

It was widely reported last week that Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Russia’s largest email service, Russia.ru, had been hacked, and that 272.3 million account names with passwords had been stolen and were on sale by the Russian hacker for one dollar. That story was greatly exaggerated, according to sources from all three of the email services as well as some independent experts. The original report, from a company called Hold Security and reported on Reuters, did point out that the information had been compiled over a long period of time from third parties and was mostly outdated and useless.
