Nearly Half Of Female Lawyers Experience Gender Bias

In a survey of 464 young female lawyers in Florida, 43 percent reported that they had experienced gender bias in their careers. In about 90 pages of anecdotes provided to the Florida Bar, the women recounted being mistaken for court reporters, being drunk dialed by senior partners, and called “blondie,” or “little lady.” They also said they were given fewer opportunities and less pay than their male peers. Forty percent said they had experienced insensitivity by an employer or supervisor, and 17 percent said they’d suffered outright harassment. Gordon Glover, the president of the Florida Bar’s Young Lawyers Division, called the results “disheartening.”
