Political Grandstanding Undermining SCOUTS, Roberts Says

Partisan politics is damaging public perception of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts said at an event in Boston this week. Though he said criticism of the court “doesn’t bother me at all,” Roberts said the context for that criticism can be worrisome when it portrays them as “in favor of this or you’re in favor of that.” In fact, Roberts said, “our ruling is that whoever does get to decide this or that is allowed to do it, and that it’s not unconstitutional, that it’s consistent with the law. But we often have no policy views on the matter at all. And that’s an important distinction.” With the presidential campaign in full swing, the Supreme Court has been a hot topic for many candidates, including Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
