Former VP Candidate John Edwards Vying To Lead VW Lawsuit

John Edwards, former U.S. Senator and running mate in Secretary of State John Kerry’s 2004 presidential run, is among the more than 140 plaintiff’s lawyers hoping to lead private litigation against Volkswagen for its emissions cheating scandal. Edwards returned to practicing law after his political career was ended by a sex scandal. Citing his previous experience as a trial lawyer and international figure, Edwards told U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer of San Francisco he had “a deep understanding of the global impact” of the case. Litigation under Breyer is consolidating hundreds of class actions filed on behalf of more than 500,000 car owners and lease-holders of Volkswagen diesel vehicles. Last year it was discovered that VW had installed equipment in those cars designed to falsify emission results.
