Uber Survey Backs Argument That Drivers Are Contractors

The car-sharing service Uber says that 69 percent of its drivers hold other jobs, according to an internal survey. That is up seven percent from last year. Almost half said the money they earn from Uber “is not a significant source of personal income.” The findings bolster the company’s argument that its drivers are independent contractors, not employees with access to benefits and other protections. The degree of control that an employer has over workers’ lives weighs heavily on whether that worker is considered an employee.
