EU Ratchets Up Cybersecurity Rules

In Europe, a “milestone” cybersecurity agreement will require upgraded digital infrastructure in essential services, including transportation control and electricity grid management, so it’s “robust enough to withstand cyber-attacks,” according to a press release from the European Parliament. The requirement will also cover online marketplaces, like eBay and Amazon, as well as search engines, cloud services, health services and finance. This agreement, according to the Parliament’s statement, will “put an end to current fragmentation” of having 28 cybersecurity systems in the member states. The text still needs to be approved by Parliament’s Internal Market Committee and the Council Committee of Permanent Representatives.
