Supreme Court Cases To Watch

Race, the criminal justice system, public sector unions and more are highlights of the Supreme Court’s forthcoming session, set to begin next week. The Court has agreed to hear 34 cases and will likely accept more at its conference on Monday, The Hill reports. The Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin case, which was already heard once by the Court in 2013, concerns the role of race as a factor in college admissions. Requirements that non-union public sector workers pay a portion of union fees, because unions negotiate for all workers, is the subject of Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association. And as the 2016 presidential election heats up, the Court will weigh in on Evenwel v. Abbott, concerning how states should measure population when drawing voter districts.
