A major share of all data breach schemes are perpetrated by insiders, according to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, with estimated costs now exceeding $3 trillion annually. To address this threat companies need to monitor all in-house use of systems. But simply monitoring is not enough, according to Matt Carey, writing in the Risk Management Monitor. In order to spot problems there must be well understood benchmarks for normal use, and the monitoring must be in real time.
