Uber Sued For Lax Background Checks

The district attorneys of Los Angeles and San Francisco are suing the ride service Uber, claiming that its system for doing background checks is inadequate, and that amounts to customer deception. The DAs allege the vetting system used by Uber is not as thorough as the one used by taxi companies, in a complaint that zeros in on the criminal histories of 25 drivers who had previous convictions for serious crimes. The company maintains its background vetting is hamstrung by California laws that make it easier for former felons to get back into the work force, and that it does as well with its vetting as the taxi companies.
