Mass Emigration Predicted For Florida

The environmental crisis in parts of Florida, notably the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale corridor, is irreversible, according to an article in the Toronto Globe and Mail. Scientists are now suggesting that “in the long run, much of South Florida cannot be saved and that policymakers should begin planning for how to best deal with a massive northward exodus in the coming decades, as some of the most iconic real estate on the continent begins to succumb to the sea.” Ironically, one of the first areas of real crisis is likely to be the water supply, as salt water permeates the aquifer. Meanwhile, the article says, construction of condos and luxury hotels continues apace, and of these, “the closest thing to a forward-looking project is a proposal by a Dutch company to build a community of multimillion-dollar mansions that float.”
