Automating employee search would speed up the process, reduce costs, and result in a more diverse workplace, say proponents of the method. Traditional methods of searching for new workers include a variety of human biases. “They’re dismissing tons and tons of qualified people,” says Sheeroy Desai, of hiring software firm Gild. Big data gathered anonymously from firms looking to hire has given algorithm developers more detail on work hours, time spent in meetings, and other indicators that help them match potential employees in non-traditional ways. But even supporters say human expertise is still needed in the process.
