NLRB Targets Union Rules For Temporary Workers

The NLRB has announced it is reviewing a case in which a Sheet Metal Workers union sought to represent in the same bargaining unit a contractor’s employees and temporary workers provided to the contractor by a staffing agency. The union argues that the current rules—which only allow multi-employer bargaining if the employers agree to it—are out of touch with the “contingent and alternative employment arrangements” that make up much of today’s workplaces. Separating “regular” from “temporary” employees is not required or justified by the statute, the union argues.
