FTC Casting A Wary Eye On Location Trackers

The FTC has taken an interest in location tracking, a practice that has become a useful business tool for many retailers and hotels, among others, and a business in itself. A post from Perkins Coie looks at two recent development on this front: the announcement of an FTC enforcement action against a startup retail analytics company called Nomi Technologies, Inc., and a blog entry about privacy and retail tracking by the FTC’s chief technologist. These developments, the attorneys write, should serve as a reminder to both the analytics firms and their clients “that the FTC is watching, and businesses must live up to the privacy promises made in connection with these forms of tracking technologies.”
