Perry Pumps SCOTUS Appointments Ahead Of Campaign Announcement

Rick Perry has told supporters he plans to join the crowded group of GOP presidential hopefuls, and at an event this weekend he highlighted prospect of Supreme Court appointments as a major factor in the next election. “Something I want you all to think about is that the next president of the United States, whoever that individual may be, could choose up to three, maybe even four members of the Supreme Court,” he said. Perry is the first of the potential candidates to discuss appointing justices as an issue, but he probably won’t be the last: AWriting in Bloomberg Politics, Sahil Kapur points out that when the presidential election is held in 2016, four Supreme Court justices will be 78 years old or older, which is the average retirement age for a high court justice, according to the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy.
