Smart Cities Vulnerable To Hackers

The smart technology that proponents say could control municipal infrastructure, down to the traffic lights and water management, is vulnerable to hackers, says an Argentinian security researcher. Cesar Cerrudo demonstrated last year how tens of thousands of traffic control sensors in major U.S. cities could be taken over by hackers if even one company failed to encrypt its traffic, and this week, testing the the traffic sensors in San Francisco, he found they were still not secure. Cerrudo suggests some security measure cities can take to avoid problems, but he says they should also create emergency response teams and be ready in case they become victim of an attack.
