Lawyer Jailed For Refusing Judge’s Questions

A lawyer who won a $1.5 settlement for her client, who was later determined to be mentally incompetent, has been jailed for refusing to tell a federal judge how she met the client and when she learned of the mental incompetency. . Caree Harper represented a woman who was beaten by a California Highway Patrol officer who claimed she was resisting arrest. Judge Otis D. Wright II last month ordered Harper to return to court with a copy of the contingency fee agreement and not to incur more costs or make more payments with the client’s share of the settlement.
