In deciding when to use personal versus work email accounts, remember that “correspondence with your client is part of the file which belongs to the client, and at the end of representation, the client can get the file back,” Mark Wilson writes for FindLaw. And if you are subject to an investigation, you want your professional emails in one account to reduce the chances that your personal emails will be subject to disclosure. Keep in mind that if an employee emails an attorney on a company computer, depending on the state, that email might not be privileged if the company has put employees on notice that their emails can be monitored.
