When does a conversation with a coworker about current events turn into a violation of company sexual harassment policy and “not safe for work, given k.” the explicit nature of some recent hot topics – Kim Kardashian breaking the internet, for example. FordHarrison’s Andy Tanick recalls a 90s case in which a jury awarded one employee $24 million after the employee was fired for explaining a Seinfeld plot line that dealt with sexuality. That verdict was thrown out in appeal, but Tanick says that, “like many other employment issues … it’s complicated.” It may be a good time to be sure employees are trained on the sexual harassment policy, Tanick says, and “to put it even more simply, ask yourself, ‘Would I be embarrassed if my parents walked in on that?’”
