Disgruntled Facebook Shuttle Bus Drivers Seek Union

Drivers who ferry Facebook workers to and from the company’s Silicon Valley campus, saying they work unreasonable hours and are paid too little, are seeking Teamsters union representation at the shuttle contractor that employs them. A top Northern California Teamsters official wrote to Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg, urging him to stand up to the contractor on behalf of the drivers. “It is reminiscent of a time when noblemen were driven around in their coaches by their servants,” Teamsters official Rome Aloise wrote in the letter. “Frankly, little has changed; except the noblemen are your employees, and the servants are the bus drivers who carry them back and forth each day.” Aloise said Teamsters was beginning with Facebook’s bus drivers and would seek to organize drivers for Google, Apple and other tech giants.
