In Texas, Obama Administration Begins Challenge To Restrictive Voting Laws

The White House’s attempt to compensate for a June Supreme Court decision that weakenedfederal oversight of states with a history of restricting voting rights begins this week in a Texas court. At the U.S. district court in Corpus Christi, the administration will argue that a new Texaslaw requiring voters to present photo identification – which Republicans argue will prevent voter fraud – will in fact result in suppressed voting for minority and disadvantaged citizens. The case is part of a legal battle over new voting rules put in place by Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) in 2011.
