Activist Nun Gets 35 Months For Nuclear Site Break-In

An octogenarian nun who, along with two other activists, broke into a U.S. nuclear weapons plant, leaving Bible quotes and blood behind, has been sentenced to 35 months in prison. Her co-conspirators, two men younger by at least two decades, each received 62-month terms. The defendants were ordered by a judge in January to pay $53,000 for damage to the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn. as the result of the 2012 break in. They were able to spend nearly two hours in the facility before they were confronted, and security contractor was later fired. Lawyers for Sister Megan Rice argued that the nine months she’s already spent in a Georgia prison should be sufficient time served for a non-violent crime, but prosecutors noted that the accused showed no contrition and instead argued against the laws they had broken.
