Target Saddled With Years Of Legal Wrangling After Holiday Data Breach

Since Target announced it had suffered a massive data breach in December, impacted customers have filed more than 70 lawsuits, a grinding process that will take years to work through the court system and, according to some, have little potential benefit for those whose data was compromised. The suits, filed in several different courts, are likely to be consolidated in one case before a federal judge, with an award – if any – having legal costs deducted and then being split among millions of customers. Banks and credit unions have their own legal actions pending, related to the cost of replacing about 17 million cards.
