Lawyers High On List For Suicide Risk

Lawyers are more than three times as likely to suffer from depression as non-lawyers, according to data the Centers for Disease Control provided CNN, and they are among the top professions at risk for suicide. In response, eight state bar associations have added “mental health” components to mandatory ongoing education and, after a rash of suicides in 2004-2005, Oklahoma established a 24-hour hotline. Theories vary, but it appears that – regardless of age or professional seniority – lawyers are prone to depression.
