Racial Comments To Jury Land Illinois Attorney In Ethics Investigation

A top prosecutor in southern Illinois who in comments to an all-white jury referred to “our white world” will face an ethics investigation. The Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission cited Williamson County State’s Attorney Charles Garnati with violating four legal ethics rules. In leading the fatal shooting case against a black defendant in 2011, Garnati made statements generalizing about the “black community” and its relationship to police. Before an appeals court reversed that jury’s 85-year sentence, Garnati said that the defendant should be given a new trial.
