Post Office Will Branch Into Staples Stores, Using Non-Union Workers

The U.S. Postal Service’s move to open new locations within Staples retail stores – to be operated by the chain store’s employees – came under fire from The American Postal Workers Union, whose members will lose out on the chance to have those jobs. The plan to open 84 post offices in Staples across the country is part of a cost-cutting effort the USPS desperately needs; the agency ran a deficit of $5 billion in 2013, and 78 percent its costs are personnel-related. Mark Dimondstein, president of the APWU, said the group’s members will protest at Staples stores across the country and pressure the USPS to hire union workers at the new locations.
