Walmart Holiday Pay Formula Has Some Employees Claiming They’re Underpaid

The unusual way that Walmart calculates holiday pay for its workers pulling the Thanksgiving day shift has some worried it is giving employees short shrift. Unlike competitors Target, Sears, Kmart, JC Penny and Toys ‘R Us – who pay holiday workers time and a half – Walmart calculates Thanksgiving day wages as regular hourly earnings plus additional pay equal to the average daily wage in the twelve weeks (Walmart says it erred when earlier this month it told the media two weeks)leading up to the holiday. Some employees claim that leading up to the holidays the store cuts the hours for employees scheduled to work those days in order to lower their holiday wages, a claim that Walmart denies.
