Appeals Court To Energy Dept: Stop Collecting Money From Nuclear Plants For Nixed Disposal Site

Nuclear utility companies scored a major victory when the D.C. Court of Appeals ruled that the federal government can no longer collect $750 million for disposal of nuclear waste in a site it currently has no plans to build. The Nuclear Waste Fund was supposed to collect money from utilities to construct and operate a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, but President Obama nixed that plan when he came to office. Though Congress has not authorized an alternative site, it continued to take, and spend, the utility funds.
