DOJ Drops Objections To Airlines Merger

The DOJ has okayed a deal that would allow American Airlines and U.S. Airways to merge. To address the Justice Department’s concerns that the merger would result in higher airfares and fewer options for customers, the airlines agree to maintain current service levels for three years and give up many flights from Ronald Reagan and LaGuardia airports to lower-cost airlines. The deal now has to be approved by the judge overseeing American Airlines’ bankruptcy proceedings.
