Gulf Dead Zone Now Larger Than Connecticut

It is caused primarily by agricultural runoff from as far north as Minnesota. Even a thousand miles up river, in Des Moines, Iowa, special equipment is needed to remove enough nitrogen to make the water drinkable. Members of an environmental group that monitors the situation have sued the EPA for failure to act, saying the Agency has been pushing back deadlines for states to meet standards for 15 years.
