$18 Million Damages Against Equifax For Recalcitrant Report Correction

The $18.4 million punitive damages award will just be booked as a cost of doing business, according to some observers, and is unlikely to affect how complaints are fielded. Credit bureaus, however, will be within the purview of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and that could make a difference. In this case, the plaintiff had tried for two years to get the errors in her file corrected. Two to four million files have errors, according to one estimate, although not all errors are detrimental to credit ratings.
